Go DJ. That’s My DJ.

I partied a lot in my 20s. No seriously, I think the only reason I stopped was because I got pregnant. I loved dancing and having fun with my friends. It was like a getaway, no matter how bad the week was, I was always looking forward to the weekend to have fun. Actually, i’m lying I was outside weekdays too. So, you can trust me here. The Dj makes the party. I know that the company you are with and what you’re drinking helps, but bad music will ruin the best of parties. You can be drinking 1942 with the Kardashians and if the DJ sucks, it won’t be a good time. The music can make or break the experience. I think DJs don’t get enough credit. In the clubs, the promoters get all the credit. But think about it, how come some parties pack out more depending on who the DJ on the flyer is. On a road trip, what makes the drive the most fun? The music. At home on Saturday, isn’t cleaning more tolerable with good music playing? If you’re having a bad day, can your favorite song make you smile? Exactly. Imagine being one person having to please thousands? That’s a lot of work. I’m not saying promoters aren’t good at their job but lets be serious, half the work is done if they book the right DJs. I’m only going to do 4 reasons I think Djs are the best part of the party cause honestly I shouldn’t even have to do more than one.

There’s levels to being drunk- Djs know this. They understand that your music choice switches the more lit you get. At first you just want to vibe with your friends and then you want to wild out and milly rock and by the end of the night you want to hear some r&b right before the lights come on. Sometimes it’s too early for Dipset and djs understand, sorry, a GOOD dj understands that. The bartender making your drink is important in keeping you drunk, but their job isn’t to entertain you. What good is a buzz with terrible music? It feels like a waste of a night when I go out and the music sucks.

They are LIVE– Djs aren’t pre-mixing anything. (most of them anyways) they aren’t only playing music they are assessing a crowd and making adjustments as necessary. They can play a song and see the crowd visibly miserable. The next song can make or break the entire party. They show up to a job and just have to hope that they are able to make every single person in there have a good time. I mean yeah, sometimes the venue attracts similar people so it’s not that hard to keep a crowd moving but you just never know who stumbled upon the spot and is now writing a review about how bad the party was because of how bad the dj was. Djs have to come up with what song comes next and what beat matches what, in the moment, right there. They have to figure out when to cut the song, when to start the song, when to change the genre, it just seems like way too much work that goes hella unappreciated. You can’t just put a playlist on shuffle, everything has to make sense and they have to figure that out in the moment.

Their name speaks for them- If you ask any promoter, their parties make more depending on who’s djing. They are able to charge more for tickets or cover because of the name on the flyer. Big name Djs can generate thousands for a party while a regular dj doesn’t really do much for them. Dj Adoni, Dj Pereira, Dj Camilo, Alex Sensation, the names alone bring people to the party, regardless of who’s throwing it. You can’t say a Dj isn’t the most important part of the party when they are the only reason people are going. There are some Djs that are hella poppin and known in their state, people go to their parties because they’ll be there. Me, a nobody, can throw a party in my backyard and say a super famous dj is going to be there and I promise that i’ll have mad people trying to come to this party solely because of who I have djing. When your name alone can pack out a venue, it’s because you’re good at what you do and people have fun when you in the booth.

It’s not just clubs– for your wedding, your baby shower, your birthday, any wavy event that you throw, you want the best DJ there. The same way you want the decorations to be good, the food to be yummy, you want the music to be good. I have been to weddings that I said were whack solely because the music wasn’t great. I have been to parties with no Dj and I’ve left early. Music makes people have fun. I’ve gone to events where people are having fun and they say “all that’s missing is a dj” We value good tunes. They are important to us. We love to party, but music is everything. Be honest, at some point, you had the Dj Lobo app and it ran for hours until your phone died. At home, on a road trip, driving to work listening to the radio, the only time you change the station is when they are giving commercials or they are talking too much. If you from NYC, you know i’m talking about funk flex.

This isn’t a blog to bash promoters. Promoters don’t have it easy. They have to find a venue, make flyers, book tables, generate money they might not have to pay for stuff beforehand, promote and get people to come. It’s not an easy job. What i’m saying is, the DJ makes the party ( I took a poll on IG before this and 98% said the DJ makes the party so don’t come for me) The music makes the party. There’s a lot of underrated DJs who aren’t given a chance by money hungry promoters who just want a good name to put on their flyer… for what… to get more people to come…why…. because the dj makes the party. You see what I did there? There are some big name DJs that shouldn’t be DJs and there’s some little name DJs that should be given a bigger chance. All i’m saying is, we have to be clear about what makes a good party, what makes a fun road trip, car ride, cleaning day, event of any kind. It’s music. Music brings people together. Music helps you say what you’re feeling when your mind can’t. Music helps you have fun. Studies have found that music can help cure anxiety and depression. You can’t tell me that the person who’s entire career is to play music isn’t to be the most valued and most paid person at the party…
